The Serbian Minister of Finance, Siniša Mali, announced that construction work on the long-awaited Belgrade metro will commence next year, with visible activity at all planned stations of the first line. The minister confirmed that, despite delays in the preparatory stages, the inaugural line is expected to be completed by the end of 2029.
“Although we are slightly behind schedule due to earlier project delays, starting next year, both Belgrade residents and citizens across Serbia will see construction works at all stations of the first metro line,” Mali stated during his visit to the newly built elementary school and kindergarten within the Belgrade Waterfront development.
First and Second Metro Lines
According to official plans, the first metro line will feature 21 stations, designed to ease congestion and modernise urban transport in the capital. In parallel, the second line, projected to include 24 stations, is already under intensive development.
“The project for the second metro line is progressing actively, and work will continue at full pace,” Mali emphasised, signalling the government’s commitment to advancing both phases of the infrastructure program.
Key Equipment and Strategic Importance
Among the critical elements for construction is the arrival of the tunnel boring machine (TBM), often referred to as the mole machine, scheduled for delivery next year. This advanced technology will play a decisive role in executing one of the most ambitious infrastructure initiatives in Serbia’s recent history.
Minister Mali highlighted that the Belgrade metro is not only a transformative project for the capital but also a cornerstone of Serbia’s long-term infrastructure strategy, aimed at improving connectivity, reducing urban congestion, and modernising public transportation.
