Elektroprivreda Crne Gore, the power company controlled by the Montenegrin government, is currently in discussions with European investors to explore the potential of collaboratively venturing into the production of environmentally friendly green ammonia and hydrogen.
Bojan Đordan, who leads the production section at Elektroprivreda Crne Gore (EPCG), mentioned during the Energy 2023 conference in Serbia that we have been approached by investors from Western Europe with a proposal to collaborate on the production of green ammonia and the development of related projects. The event was organized by the Domestic Energy Experts Association.
Additional information will be made available in the near future as the utility company has already taken the initial steps, as mentioned by Đordan.
He added that we would be grateful to have the opportunity to sign a memorandum of understanding on such projects with a prominent company from the sector.
He kindly explained that the concept is to generate ammonia using renewable energy sources, specifically wind and solar. Ammonia would be utilized in fundamental industrial production procedures in diverse sectors, encompassing energy.
Đordan mentioned that there is also a keen interest from Western European companies in the production of green hydrogen. Furthermore, he emphasized that hybrid production using renewable energy is being considered as a viable possibility.
According to him, it is possible to consider the inclusion of gas power plants in the projects. It is worth mentioning that EPCG has previously stated its intentions to explore the construction of hybrid power plants that would utilize both renewable sources and natural gas.
Ammonia and hydrogen have multiple applications including energy storage, fuel usage, and raw material utilization. However, the primary focus for the energy transition lies in the former two roles.
The International Conference Energy 2023 – Energy Independence of the Region in the Light of Global Disturbances – New Reality brought together over 300 experts from the European Union and the region. The conference was formally inaugurated by Radoš Popadić, an adviser in the Ministry of Mining and Energy. Nikola Rajaković and Milun Babić, presidents of the Energy Experts Association and its assembly, respectively, warmly welcomed all the participants.
