Speaking at a news conference after a meeting with Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic, he said that it’s important for Serbia to have fair, inclusive elections with everyone taking part which would, according to the commissioner, allow the country to meet its obligations more quickly. Brnabic met with Varhelyi and EU High Representative Josep Borrell prior to a meeting of the Serbia-EU Stabilization and Association Council.

Varhelyi said that a clear signal has been sent to Serbia that the EU wants to continue cooperation with Belgrade at the highest level as part of its engagement in the Western Balkans. The commissioner said that a review of Serbia’s progress had been completed adding that there were two important things that the country has to do – achieve progress in terms of rule of law and constitutional reform, and progress in the pre-accession talks.
