On Tuesday, Kosovo Parliament Speaker Glauk Konjufca stated that Pristina is nearing completion of preparations to file a genocide lawsuit against Serbia.
Konjufca stated that the charges of genocide are currently being prepared with the assistance of experts, following a meeting of the Parliament Presidency.
“I can’t say the exact month, but I know that an important job has been done so far. We have consulted with the foremost experts who know to draft expert proceedings against Serbia’s genocide against the people of Kosovo….It’s coming soon, please ask the government for details,” he said.
In 2021, Prime Minister Albin Kurti expressed his intention to file a suit for genocide against Serbia with the International Court of Justice on behalf of his government. According to experts based in Kosovo, it appears that filing a genocide suit is not possible at this time due to various procedural and other reasons. Gzim Shala, an investigator at the Kosovo Law Institute, explained that there are certain procedural requirements that must be met before such a suit can be filed. Similarly, Bekim Blakaj, the chief of the Kosovo Humanitarian Law Fund, noted that a thorough investigation would need to be conducted first, which could take a considerable amount of time.
