Lithuania supports the integration of the Republic of Moldova into the European Union and is concerned about the situation on the left bank of the Dniester and in the region. The statement was made in Chisinau by President of Lithuania Gitanas Nauseda during a joint press conference with head of state Maia Sandu, writes Moldpres News Agency
President Maia Sandu noted that Chisinau appreciates Lithuania’s solidarity and support in several areas, including the European integration process. “We appreciate your solidarity. We have all seen the atrocities in the neighbouring country. The Ukrainian tragedy concerns us all. We are closely monitoring the situation and our analysis shows that the Republic of Moldova is not in danger, but we remain vigilant. Moldovans did not stay away from the tragedy of their Ukrainian neighbours, they mobilized. More than 90,000 Ukrainians still remain in the Republic of Moldova. Lithuania offered us 750 thousand euros to cover part of the expenses for refugees. The war in Ukraine greatly affects the Republic of Moldova, exports and imports from the east have stopped. The opening of the Lithuanian market would be beneficial for our country. Lithuania’s European road is a good example for Moldova, but for that we need peace. We are counting on the support of the Vilnius Government for Moldova to obtain candidate status. Our choice is the European Union because it is a peace project “, Sandu said.
The Vilnius official reiterated his country’s support for Moldova’s European integration process. “We understand that the Republic of Moldova was severely affected by the war and we support its integrity. What is happening on the left bank of the Dniester is worrying us, but we must not fall prey to the challenges. Lithuania supports Moldova’s European aspirations and is ready to share its experience in the process of diversifying the energy market, “Nauseda said.
