Officials from North Macedonia and Serbia have signed a memorandum of understanding outlining the proposed enhancement of the 206 km Skopje – Niš route.
The anticipated upgrades may involve the modernization of the existing single-track route and the potential construction of new sections. Local media suggests that this could result in an increased line speed of up to 160 km/h, with a planned maximum of 120 km/h on challenging geographical segments in Serbia.
There are also plans for a branch to connect the main line with Skopje airport. Although financing has not been secured, both countries have agreed to explore EU funding opportunities.
Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabić expressed, “By signing this memorandum, we have laid the foundation for future development in our relations and connections.” She made this statement during a press conference alongside her North Macedonian counterpart, Dimitar Kovačevski, held in Belgrade on November 17 following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding.
