Mateusz Morawiecki, the Polish prime minister, has called for withering sanctions on Russian fossil fuels and barring Russian ships from European ports because Russia is committing a “massacre” in Ukraine.
Morawiecki made the call on Thursday night, and as concern grew over Russia’s conduct of its war on Ukraine.
“What has been going on in Ukraine today is not a war, it is a massacre,” Morawiecki said before an EU summit in Brussels on Thursday.
Morawiecki added that attacks on civilians and humanitarian convoys should be described as barbarity.
“That is why Poland is calling for cutting Russia off from the sources financing its war machine,” he added.
According to Morawiecki, the EU should impose tough sanctions on the trade-in of Russian gas, crude oil, coal and all hydrocarbons. “If we do not pay this price today, we will pay it either tomorrow or the day after tomorrow,” he said.
“We must convince everybody of the need for crushing, far-reaching sanctions,” he added.
The Polish prime minister also declared that he would ask the EU to close off European ports to Russian shipping and halt trade with that country.
“Poland has been fulfilling its duty towards its neighbour, and towards the free world,” Morawiecki said, and added that determination was needed towards Russia in order to keep the world safe and restore peace in Ukraine.
“Poland has been organising humanitarian, diplomatic and political assistance, as well as delivering defensive arms in order to make it possible for Ukraine to defend its territorial integrity and sovereignty,” the prime minister said, adding that this was of key significance for European and global security.
