Serbian Energy Minister Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic Finalizes €2 Billion Renewable Energy Collaboration with Chinese Firms on January 26th, with Shanghai Fengling Renewables Taking the Lead in Investment
“Serbia’s Landmark Renewable Energy Project Unveiled in Partnership with Shanghai Fengling Renewables and Serbia Zijin Copper”
Serbia has embarked on its most significant renewable energy venture to date through an agreement signed with Shanghai Fengling Renewables and Serbia Zijin Copper, where Serbia holds a co-ownership interest. The ambitious initiative centers around the establishment of a state-of-the-art facility near Bor, boasting a total capacity of 2GW.
The comprehensive project encompasses the construction of a 1,500 MW wind power plant, a 500 MW solar power plant, and the establishment of a green hydrogen production facility with an annual capacity of approximately 30,000 tonnes.
Minister Djedovic Handanovic emphasized that the energy generated will primarily serve the production needs of Zijin, a prominent Serbian exporter that has significantly expanded its operations, particularly following the Bor smelter reconstruction’s completion.
The construction of the plant is slated to commence in the first quarter of the upcoming year, with the first phase targeting 700 MW expected to be operational by mid-2026. The ultimate objective is to complete the entire project, achieving the full 2,000 MW capacity and an annual green hydrogen production capacity of 30,000 tonnes by the conclusion of 2028.
This groundbreaking initiative is poised to create between 300 and 500 new jobs, primarily within the renewable energy sector. Through this strategic partnership, Serbia is positioning itself as a major hub for renewable energy project production and equipment, including green hydrogen. Moreover, the project is anticipated to play a pivotal role in advancing Serbia’s energy security and independence objectives, aligning seamlessly with the nation’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
