Serbia to invest 4 mln euro in biomass heating plant in Majdanpek

The Serbian government has expressed its intention to invest 4 million euro ($4.3 million) in the construction of a biomass heating plant in the eastern municipality of Majdanpek.

According to a press release from the government, the biomass heating plant is set to be constructed as a component of a 5.5 million euro project aimed at renovating the local hot water network and substations.

We kindly inform you that the work on the hot water network and substations is anticipated to commence in the upcoming days and is carefully planned to conclude before the onset of the heating season.

The project is a collaboration with KfW Bank and 22 public utility companies aimed at building, rehabilitating, modernizing, and converting up to 30 district heating plants in Serbia from fossil fuels to biomass.

Serbia has already initiated the operation of biomass heating plants in Novi Pazar, Priboj, and Mali Zvornik.

According to the Association of Renewable Energy Sources of Serbia’s data, it has been projected that by 2025, biomass has the highest potential for renewable energy sources in Serbia, which amounts to 3.4 tonnes of oil equivalent per year.
